and

Meet Web101: Free Introductory Session
special guest: Shannon Mlhave
An introduction to Web101. will also give a quick preview of the material to be covered in the workshops they are leading.
A Print Designer's Guide to the Web and Design Patterns for the Web
with Charles Mangin and Keon Pettiway
We'll go over some of the conceptual differences between print design and web design, control issues, interactivity, measurability, workflow, and measurement increments. Then its time to start getting familiar with some of the basic conventions used in web design, including navigation menus, breadcrumbs, sidebars, footers, contact forms, and more.
May 10, 2011@ 6:30pm
User-Friendly Web Design (Usability) (UX)
with Greg Carter
The web is an interactive medium, and the top priority is helping people get to what they need as quickly and pleasantly as possible. Well discuss browsing behavior, how to avoid over-complicating a design, and some basic best practices.
June 14, 2011@ 6:30pm
The Very Basics of Web Design & HTML/CSS for Newbies
with Charles Mangin
Were starting from the very, very beginning: the invention and early history of the Web, as well as an overview of the fundamental technologies that make it work. Someone whos never seen a line of HTML code before will be able to come out of this meeting with a basic understanding of (and hands-on experience with) tags, hyperlinks, and basic styling. Well also introduce you to W3C.
July 12, 2011@ 6:30pm
Intermediate HTML & CSS
with Brett Buddin
By now you should be familiar with the basics of HTML, so well dig into some of the more interesting elements of it, including forms, data tables, and using CSS for layout. Well also introduce cross-browser testing (always a good idea!) We will also touch on HTML5 and CSS3 in the class, its implications, and expected wide spread use. Also talk about javascript briefly jQurey.
August 9th, 2011@ 6:30pm
Conceptual Design for the Web (Information Architecture)
with Abe Crystal
Before you start into the aesthetics, its important to figure out what needs to go where (and why). Well show you how to organize your site and lay out pages using card sorting, mind mapping, wireframes, and more. Also talk about hosting.

September 13, 2011@ 6:30pm
Typography for the Web
with Ethan Geyer
One of the tricky things about web design is the relative lack of font choices compared with print design. Well show you some tips and tricks for adding a bit more typographical variety to your designs, including image-based text, sIFR, and other solutions.
October 11, 2011@ 6:30pm
Designing Websites for Everyone (Accessibility)
with Keon Pettiway
With print design, its usually pretty easy to predict how someone will be seeing your work. On the web, however, a variety of disabilities or impairments may affect how they browse the site. This isnt about political correctness; these are real customers that you could be missing.
November 8, 2011@ 6:30pm
What Designers Need to Know About Writing for the Web
with Alice Williams
Even if youre not writing the copy yourself, its important to understand that text on the web is read very differently than text in a book or a brochure. Well discuss messaging, scannability, repetition, and search optimization, as well as increased SEO with writing.
Happy Holidays
No workshop scheduled.
January 10, 2012@ 6:30pm
Tools for Managing Websites
with Matthew Kelly
You dont always have to do it the hard way! Well show you software solutions that make it easy for you or your clients to update a website, publish new articles, change text around, etc. Topics: CMS, email marketing, Version Control, GIT, Coda, Subversion, talking with your developer.
February 7, 2012@ 6:30pm
Current Trends in Web Design
with Matthew Kelly
Now that youre ready to go out into the world and start designing websites for clients, well make sure youre up to date on current developments, fads, trendy styles, new technologies, and future directions for the industry. Well also briefly discuss scripting, and easy to implement libraries.
March 13, 2012
Final Class
Wrap up, answer final questions. Participants demonstrate final websites. Area recruiters, experts and hiring managers will be on hand to provide feedback from a unique position. Area group leaders will also be there to speak about what they do, how to get involved and ways of learning more independently.
Class held on 1st Tuesday
